Band of the Week: The Back Horn

Hey all!  DJ Visual Kei here! ^o^

I decided the blogging from me is mostly going to be a "band of the week" type of thing.  My goal is to introduce listeners to a new Japanese BAND each week and expand your musical libraries!

My band for this week will be: The Back Horn

While I was listening to the radio show from my cold, snowy, GIANT SPIDER INFESTED apartment in Aomori, Japan last semester, I made a request to Daniel and Rafiq to hear Wana by The Back Horn.  Both Daniel and Rafiq loved it, and I heard great comments from other people as well.

On the September 26th show I also played Wana, a joint personal decision and request from my best friend.  Again, the song got GREAT feedback!

If you can't remember or missed the 9/26 show, then check out the song on Youtube.  Video is weird, but the song ROCKS!

Wana, The Back Horn

Now, let it be known that I was (and still am) OBSESSED with this song. SO obsessed, that it became a regular karaoke song for me.  Can you imagine me, (with my adorable girly voice!) rocking out to this song in a karaoke box with several 30/40-something year old Japanese co-workers?  I know, right! ^_~

Discovery
I discovered Wana through the anime Gundam 00 - Wana is the 1st ending theme for Gundam 00 season 1.

The Back Horn
Now, I'll be honest - I never really delved too deep into The Back Horn.  I listened to a few other of their songs, but not enough to pick any other favorites.  I've been looking into it a bit since the last radio show and surprisingly, The Back Horn started out in 1998!  All 4 members of the group are 40 years old, 3 of them are mere days apart in age! (And all 3 are celebrating their birthday this month!)

FUN FACT:
According to my sources (wikipedia... ;_; ) "The Back Horn" got their name from a bastardization of the word "backhoe" as one of the members of the group was apparently using a backhoe at work and liked the term.  Oh, Japan...

Wana
Wana is apparently the 16th major song release from The Back Horn and is from their 7th album!

Thoughts from DJ Visual Kei
From what I was reading (thank you Wikipedia!) The Back Horn is signed with a major label, but is considered to be an "indie" band.  And I'm honestly inclined to agree.  Prior to watching Gundam 00, I had never heard of The Back Horn, and I assumed they were a new band.  (Imagine my surprise when I watched the music video and saw that they're older guys!)

I've listened to a few of The Back Horn's songs besides Wana, and am making an effort to seek out more on youtube.  For now I would suggest "Koe" to anyone who wants to hear more.

The Back Horn are a work in progress for me, and I'd love to swap song suggestions with anyone else who plans to explore the band further.  For further discussion about The Back Horn, join me on our Blue Haired Modern Day Samurai forums @ http://moderndaysamurai.forumotion.com/the-music-japanese-non-anime-f8/the-back-horn-t12.htm
